Speaker in passenger footwell

Does anyone know what the single speaker is for in the passenger footwell. I noticed when I was cleaning the inside at the weekend under the glove box there is no cover to stop your feet from kicking the wires up behind the dash , so after looking on ebay I found the covers but some have a single speaker fitted does anyone know what it's for and if so can I plug and play.
